CHEW’S SERVICE CENTRE OFFERS FREE LEGAL ADVICE

LEGAL advice is given free to the public every Friday except public holidays from 8pm to 10pm at PJ Utara MP Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun’s service centre in Taman Mayang, Petaling Jaya.

A panel of lawyers runs the legal aid clinic and will take turns to give legal advice.

The panel of volunteer lawyers are Lai Chee Hoe, Thong Weng Hon, Agnes Chow, Christina Hew Chong Chee Yin, Suzzane Tang and Sree Kant Pillai.

“The public’s perception when it comes to legal advice is that you have to pay lawyers to consult them but we want to help the public who are not well off or do not know where to turn to for advice,” Lai said.

While this is not the first time that the panel has volunteered their services, this is the first that the service is being formalised into a regular consultation service made available to the public.

The group is expecting the bulk of the issues that the public would seek advice on are property and family related, based on the experience at legal aid clinics organised by the National Bar Council’s National Young Lawyers and the KL Young Lawyer committee and at the Women and Children Aid Unit under Chew Mei Fun’s office.

Chew meanwhile commended the group for taking the initiative to offer free legal advice to the public.

“They are setting a good example for young lawyers and they are already helping some of my constituents, like the land issue problem in Sungei Way,” Chew said.

“In fact, we have the need for more professionals like architects and engineers to come forward, to do the same – to give advice regardless of race and privilege.

“There are many other issues in PJ that requires their knowledge and expertise and it would be of great help to the public if we have more such individuals coming forward.”

Chew added that the panel would also be helping her with research functions on laws related to local governance and community-related issues.

Persons seeking aid from this panel do not have to provide information on their income, savings or properties owned, as is the practise of legal aid schemes provided by the Legal Aid Bureau (service provided by the government) and the Legal Aid Centre (service provided by the Bar Council).

The consultation service will be available on a first-come-first-serve basis to walk-in residents and are advised to bring all the relevant documents for the visit.

Information will be kept strictly confidential. Lawyers and other professionals who would like to offer their services and the public who would like to know more about the legal aid clinic can call 03-7805 5282.
